About Kauaʻi Insider
Kauaʻi Insider is a visitor information service built around one rule: we only publish what a named source actually measured or announced, and we always show when.
Our sources
- U.S. Geological Survey — station 16104200, gage height (parameter 00065), via the USGS Water Data OGC API. Official station page ↗
- National Weather Service — active alerts for the Hanalei point 22.2036, -159.4993, via api.weather.gov. NWS Honolulu ↗
- County of Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi DOT — road conditions. There is no public live feed, so any status we show is entered from a named official announcement, with its link and publication time, and expires after about 6 hours unless renewed.
How the data is kept current
- We refresh a source at most every 5 minutes, and only when someone is actually looking at the page.
- We track two separate times: when the agency measured the value, and when we retrieved it. A successful connection that returns an old measurement is still old data, and we judge staleness on the measurement.
- A river reading older than 60 minutes is labelled as delayed rather than shown as current.
- We keep 90 days of river observations for graphs and trends. Older data stays with USGS, where it belongs.
- When many people arrive at once, only one request goes out to the government API; everyone else sees the same result.
What we will never tell you
We will never say a road is open or closed, a beach is safe or unsafe, or a trail is passable, on the basis of a river measurement or our own judgement. We will never invent a number, smooth a government measurement, or leave an expired report on screen looking current.
Government agencies and emergency officials are always the authority. In an emergency, call 911.
Privacy
We count page views and taps on the official-source links so we know which information is useful. We use a random identifier that lasts only for your browsing session, we do not build a profile of you, and we do not collect your location.
