0 observations plotted exactly as USGS published them. Gaps in the line are gaps in the published data — nothing is smoothed or filled in.

What gage height is — and is not

Gage height is the river's water-surface height relative to the USGS station's reference elevation. It is not the depth of water over the road.

A high or rising reading does not mean the road is closed, and a low or falling reading does not mean it is open or safe. Only the County of Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi DOT and emergency officials can say that.

Most near-real-time USGS readings are marked provisional. That is normal: the measurement has not yet been reviewed and may later be revised. We show the status USGS publishes rather than hiding it.

How we calculate change and trend

  • The newest valid USGS observation is treated as current. Observations arrive roughly every 15 minutes and can be irregular or delayed.
  • For a 1, 3 or 6 hour change we step back from the current observation's time and use the closest observation within 20 minutes of that target. If nothing is close enough we report unavailable — we never interpolate or invent a value.
  • Trend is Rising, Falling or Steady over 60 minutes, with changes under 0.05 ft read as Steady. Trend calculated by Kauaʻi Insider from USGS observations. It is not an official USGS status, and there is no "rising quickly" classification because no validated rate-of-rise threshold exists for this gage.
  • A reading is flagged as delayed once the measurement is more than 60 minutes old, judged on when USGS measured it — not on when we last connected.
